Summer 1942. The banks of the Volga are living their last moments of peace. On August 23rd, German aircraft change the fate of Stalingrad forever. Nearly 1,000 tonnes of bombs rain down on the city in the most violent bombing raid of the entire Second World War. 80% of the city is destroyed. Thousands of civilians perish in this surprise attack. It marks the beginning of an extraordinary battle lasting nearly six months, a brutal conflict claiming up to 10,000 lives a day, and the first major urban battle in history.

Born of the ambitions of two dictators at the helm of the Third Reich and the USSR, this deadly confrontation pits the overwhelming might of the Wehrmacht against Soviet armies who display unparalleled ingenuity. Dogs are trained to blow up tanks. Music is broadcast through the night to deprive German soldiers of sleep. And for the first time, snipers, like those immortalised on screen, are deployed on a massive scale.

How do the Soviets ultimately win this monumental clash through a surprise operation? And what is the true impact of this battle?

Using dynamic mapping and 3D animation, drawing on the insight of leading historians, and confronting myth with reality, this is the extraordinary story of a legendary battle, hell on Earth.
